In his 1960 book "The Annotated Alice", Martin Gardner attributes this answer (which is apparently correct) to a Peter Suckling of Dobbs Ferry, NY.

Like many of his answers to riddles, he published it in a magazine. Indeed, the answer is oysters. He modeled this riddle after a poem/riddle very similar to this one.
