Raiders of the Lost Ark Easter Egg - Nazi Spy/Effects Master

When Dr. Jones leaves for Egypt to look for the Ark and climbs on board that snappy sea-plane, he pulls his hat down for a nap. As he does this, a man stares at him suspiciously from behind a copy of Life magazine( I think it was Life ) and then he sinks down behind the magazine again...This man is Dennis Muren. Mr. Muren is one of the effects geniuses at ILM, George Lucas' special effects company!

Ummm... no. If I recall correctly, the guy behind the magazine is just Toht - the Nazi who burns his hand on the headstone to the Staff of Ra. They are playing with a little foreshadowing here. Unless there is someone else you are talking about.

I'm pretty sure it was the guy who burns his hand in the following sequence.

The gentleman who peered at Dr. Jones over the newspaper was the character Toht, played by Ronald Lacey. He is the character who burned his hand on the head piece of the Staff of Rah, and who later interrogated Marion in the tent in the desert after hanging his coat on a hanger that more closely resembled a weapon.

It is Dennis Muren on the plane. I have a book by Thomas G. Smith entitled "Industrial Light and Magic-The Art of Special Effects" which shows a picture of "Dennis Muren (in Nazi spy costume)" (Thus says the caption.) If you can get the book, it is on page 140 in the lower-left hand corner.

I don't see why there's any confusion... he is DEFINITELY Toht.

Duff, I have that book. Muren is on page 140 in "disguise", but there's no reference to that particular scene. They're just standing outside near a plane.

it most certainly is not Toht. Toht has roud glasses, if you'll look. the man on the airplane has rounded bottomed glasses, but flat-topped.
