Webster's Dictionary calls paraffin "the same as kerosene" (perhaps meaning that it can have some of the same uses), but paraffin is actually more akin to wax. Yeah, I know I'm splitting hairs, but I just found this website & I'm looking for any excuse to contribute!

TubaGuy is wrong. Parafin IS the same as kerosene. Even if you CAN get parafin wax (never heard of it), Esso Blue is a kindof kerosene

In a "Cash for Questions" article of Q Magazine a few months back, Sting confirms this. He also says why he sang it (unfortunately, I don't think I have the magazine any more, but I think it may have simply been related to an advert on the telly in 1979)

Just briefly - paraffin IS the same as kerosene ... the same way ice, water and steam are the same ... just different forms ... paraffin is waxy and kerosene is a liquid ...

Sting used to sing with the Police. That's why there's a reference to him in this Police song entry.
