Donnie Darko Easter Egg - Last Temptation

Whenever the movie theatre is shown, look at the movies playing. One of them is "The Last Temptation of Christ", a movie in which Jesus lives in a world where he wasn't crucufied and sees what would have happened had he not died. Sort of the same idea as "Donnie Darko". Donnie experiances the 28 days as they would have occurred had he not died when the engine crashed into his room on October 2nd. Had he not died he would have caused his mother and Gretchen's death.

Not only would his Mother and Gretchen have died, but his little sister Samantha would have also, seeing as she was on the plane with her mom (as were all her friends from 'Sparkle Motion') coming home. I never saw The Last Temptation, but now that you pointed out what it was about I will see it. I loved Donnie Darko..

I've just watched DD for the first time last evening. Weirdness completely ensued...I had rented DD from Netflix along with a couple of other movies. Two movies arrived yesterday. Donnie Darko and The Last Temptation of Christ. Yet another movie I hadn't seen. Much to my delight, wonder and pure awe, to say that I was a little freaked out when Mr. Darko stepped out of the theatre and rolling on the marque above was The Last Temptation of Christ. Bewildered and freaked I called a friend who equally shared my amusement. The eerieness doesn't stop there. I'm wondering whether or not any others have noticed the modern day christ overature present in Donnie Darko, with a twist of Martin Scorsese. There are many similarities between Donnie Darko and TLTOC, much more than what the previous writer has written. If you seriously want to freak yourselves with a little bit of apocalyptic religious, sci-fi flavor Watch Donnie Darko and follow it immediately with The Last Temptation of Christ. The similarities are unbelievably eerie! Enjoy...hope to hear back from some people that want to explore it more....Soon to see the Directors Cut. Can't wait 28 days....

I think that "old lady death" says to Donnie Darko, " You pick who dies". I love the fact that it's a sci-fi film hidden in a suburban canvas! It's just a little tease for all you Chaos Theory people!

Actually, the reasoning behind the movie, is that Donnie enters into an alternate reality, which can only exist for a couple of weeks. Once this reality fails, however, it will destroy the earth. This reality was formed when the engine crossed realities and fell onto his room. He was the "chosen" person, the only one who could bring the engine back into the "real" reality. This means that Donnie did not have to die, for in the "real" reality, he would not have Frank, and he would not have flooded the school, etc...

Cocershay, maybe before calling others morons for not paying attention, you should pay enough attention to notice that she's called "grandma death," not "old lady death."

Its funny that is an egg, because the first time I saw the movie, my friend asked me if I understood it, and I said I thought it was a reference to Christ with how he had to die to help his family and friends, but she said I was crazy. Glad to know I'm not!
