Listen when Hammie names the bush Steve in the beginning. The only reason he calls it Steve is because Hammie is being played by (!STEVE!) Carell.

If you have listened to the commentary, you would see that they started with a whole batch of names. and then they deiced on steve. and if im correct, with animated movies (and really any movie) they ussually have the script done before they have a solid set on who will be playing the characters.
