Go to Eggman's level 'Iron Gate', and play through. If you ever watched the Japanese animated movie; Akira, it may seem framiliar.
The level Iron Gate was modeled after an undergroud lab where Akira was held in, from the wiring in the walls, to the sliding elevators!
