2. While holding reset turn key to run, keep holding 3. When text appears in LCD, release trip reset

Seems to me that having the key is the key here....have you considered ASKing for the key, GETting the key (making sure it's the correct colour)and then USEing the key? I suspect textbased chocolate machine adventures will lose their popularity as the new Digital chocolate becomes more available. Remember, four digits in a Kit Kat and Ms Collins...
