The killer in the movie is named Michael Myers. That name was given to him as a thank you to the real Michael Myers, the head of Miracle Pictures, that helped fund the movie.

As an obvious nod to Jamie Lee Curtis' mom Janet Leigh, John Carpenter borrowed Dr. Sam Loomis' name from Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. Sam Loomis was the name of Janet Leigh's character's lover.
