Burnett, Carol Easter Egg - Carol Burnett's Ear
If you notice Carol grabbing her ear at any time....she's really saying "Hello" to her grandmother named "Nanny" at home. That's their signal.

She is saying hello, but the 'hello' is to her grandmother.

I'm pretty sure I've heard in an interview with her that it is her grandmother, her grandma raised her. When she first started out in acting she moved away from home and her grandma, of course, was worried. Carol and Grandma made the secret signal that meant "everything is okay". After a while, it just became a habit with her.

Carol is saying hello to her Grandmother. It started when she got her first appearance on a TV show. She couldn't actually say hello on a live broadcast, so this was her special way of saying hello. It stuck with her even after her Grandmother's passing.

This started as a sign to Carol's grandma. She has said it is many times in interviews. Carol still tugs her ear as a tribute, even though the grandmother has passed.

She has actually said on TV that it's her grandmother. Does this really count as an egg?

The tug on the ear is not just for her grandmother anymore, it is now also for her daughter who passed away.
