There's a simple explanation for this. In notepad, any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo will have the same results.
It is all to do with a limitation in Windows. Text files containing Unicode UTF-16-encoded Unicode are supposed to start with a "Byte-Order Mark" (BOM), which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is encoded.
The reason this happens:
1) You are saving to 8-bit Extended ASCII (Look at the Save As / Encoding format)
2) You are reading from 16-bit UNICODE (You guessed it, look at the Save As / Encoding format)
This is why the 18 8-bit characters are being displayed as 9 (obviously not supported by your codepage) 16-bit UNICODE characters

Erm... have you noticed that this egg has already been mentioned in the same catigory using the exact same words as the title?

There's no Bush references there. Try typing "your hat was dirty" (no quotes) - it results the same thing.

Though it is quite funny, it is not an easter egg. It is a bug in Notepad. Type 4 words, where the first word has 4 characters, the second 3, the third 3, and the fourth 5. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_hid_the_facts

Well, to be honest this is nothing NEAR an egg.
Ok, because of the encoding you save it in any array of words with that number of characters. Its just a formatting issue.
For those who are making annoying comments and lieing about your findings on this - please don't we are looking for some real easter eggs here.

This "egg" only appears in versions of Windows up to Windows XP. Microsoft fixed this bug in Vista.

On my computer I tried this and it came up with Japanese or maybe Chinese characters"畢桳栠摩琠敨映捡獴" I'm not sure. But the reason why other people would get the display from the screen shot on this page is because they don't have the Japanese or Chinese character set installed on there computer.
