Windows 2000 Easter Egg - Volcano Screensaver

1) Right click on "Properties" on the desktop.
2) Go to the "Screensaver" menu.
3) Go to the 3-D text screensaver and open the properties.
4) In the text box, type "volcano" (without quotes).

Enjoy! Note: this is the same egg that has already been listed in Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT.

This is NOT an egg with the Windows shell for MS-DOS (Windows ME isn't a shell, though). Instead, it's an egg with the screen saver. I copied it to Windows 3.11, and the "volcano" egg still worked.

Yes, that does work. I copied the 3dtext.scr file from 98 (windows\system) to 2000 (winnt\system32). The volcano still works. I never could get the magic.txt thing to work in NT, however.

Rather than the word "Volcano" bouncing around, it shows different names of volcanos from the Pacific Northwest. "Rock" used to show names of rock bands, and "Beer" showed names of beers. However, I don't think that the latter two work on any recent versions.

I have seen some screen-savers that use the 3D-text to display different names.. I don't recall it exactly, but the text rotates for a while, and then i "zooms out" and disappear in to the back, and a new text appears.. does anyone know what I'm talking about? I would like it if somebody would tell me how this was done...

Someone said that it WOULD work in Windows2000 if you copy the 3DText.scr file over from a Windows 9x machine. I tried that and unfortunately it does NOT work for me in Windows 2000 Professional. Anyone else???

I found that the tip *does* work if you copy the 3D Text.scr file from Win98. However, you have to "activate" this by running it at least once from the winnt/system32 directory manually, otherwise Windows doesn't seem to be aware of it. Once I double-clicked on the file in /winnt/system32, it showed up as an option in the screen-savers menu.

interesting..."rock" and "beer" didn't work, and when i typed in "volcano" the screen saver was all these random words popping up and flying away...words like "three fingered jack" and "jefferson". is that's what's supposed to happen?

To get your own selection of words appearing you need to do the following. Open Regedit and search for the string HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Screen Saver.3DText You now need to create a new String Value called Magic When this is made you will need to enter a value for it which will be the name of the file you want to use e.g. c:\winnt\magic.txt Now create the file (c:\winnt\magic.txt) using notepad and enter info in the following format. -Test blah deedum hello n00b Important- the first word must be preceded by a hyphen as this is used to designate a group of words. It is this word that you must enter into the 3D Text screensaver 'textbox'. When you run the screensaver you will get a random showing af all the words under the hyphened word in the text file. You can add more sections to the text file (again give each section a hyphened keyword to use in the screensaver dialogue box). Hope that makes sense!!
